You don't have to go on Shark Tank to build a "successful" business. I didn't have investors. I didn't grow up in a family of entrepreneurs. I didn't even know I was starting a businesswhen I started Simple & Sentimental. I was a freshman in college doing something that was fun for me + generated some income on the side.
But what is a successful business anyway? I believe a successful business is determined by its ability to serve its customers, employees, suppliers, its owner (yes, you too!), and anyone the business touches. Entrepreneurial success and a thriving personal and family life are not mutually exclusive. It isn't easy, but nothing worth doing is.
You've probably been told that "you can't have it all" in business. This is true if aren't steering your business in the direction you want it to go, or if you aren't steering it at all. Without proper direction and vision, your company will go wherever the current takes it. That could turn out great, or it might not. You don't really know, because you aren't steering.
With the right direction and procedures in place, you can build a business that works for you: not the other way around.
